Background
Queenstown Library offers a pleasant environment in which to research, read, study or relax. The Library is spacious and comfortable and has a comprehensive collection of books, magazines and audio visual material.
We are located in the downstairs of the QLDC building, adjacent to a large public parking area, and close to the main Queenstown shopping area.
Resources
Check our library catalogue for information on the resources available within our district. If an item is not in the library we can often source it from one of the other branches within the district or “interloan” it from another library in New Zealand.
New Books
New books are available to read as soon as they are processed and released into the library collection.
Get Well Bags
We offer Get Well Bags, available for three week loans, containing 2 Talking Books, 1 DVD, 3 Magazines and 2 recently published books.
Special Collections
The Moke Lake Collection: These are books formerly held in the historic Moke Creek and Upper Shotover libraries.
Local History Collection: Items of specific local and historical interest, many now out of print.
Both of these collections are not for loan, but we are happy for you to use them in the library.
Foreign Language Collection: we offer a small range of books published in foreign languages. While the majority are in French, German and Japanese there are a number in other languages as well. These books are available for loan.
Local Government
Queenstown Lakes District Council meeting agendas and district plan information and Otago Regional Council notifications are held in the reference area.
Electoral Rolls
The Otago Electoral rolls are available. Please ask staff for these.
Services
Queenstown Library is part of the shared Library service for Central Otago and Queenstown Lakes Libraries. Our services, membership, borrowing and issuing policies are consistent throughout all libraries within our district.
Public Internet Access/Word Processing
We have computers with broadband internet access available for use. Research (for example: study, academic research, fact finding) is free; other Internet uses are charged at $2 per half hour or part thereof.
Fundview and Breakout funding databases are also available on these computers.
Interloans: If we are unable to source an item locally we are often able to obtain it for you from another library service. We charge a base fee of $7 per item. Interloans will only be issued for a standard three week period and cannot be renewed.
Disability Resources: The National Library of New Zealand Provides a wide selection of Talking Books on CD and cassette and the selection is updated every few months.
Large Print books are also available and the collection is circulated around our district.
Children’s Services
The Queenstown Library has a large Children’s area dedicated to Children’s Literature and resources.
Children’s Books
The library holds a wide range of reading material from the very young up to the pre-adult. Collections are organised by content and age group. If you require assistance in choosing material for your child, the Children’s Librarian can help locate the appropriate book for your child’s reading requirements.
Get Well Bags: Is your child unwell? We have bags available for three week loans containing books, puzzles and DVDs.
School Holiday Programmes: Each school holiday we offer a range of craft/story sessions each lasting about an hour. We cater for a range of ages 3 & 4, 4 - 8 and 9- 13. Bookings are essential. Contact the children’s librarian for further information.
Summer Reading Challenge: In order to encourage kids to keep reading over the long summer school break we have a summer reading challenge. Each child chooses an appropriate target number of books and all those who reach their target receive a reward.
Computers: We have two computers for children to use for games and CDROMs. Bookings essential!
Disability resources: The Library provides up to date resources for children with sight disabilities.
Children’s talking books are available on CD and cassette as well as large print books.
History of the Queenstown Library
The first official library in Queenstown (known as the Old Stone Library) was opened in 1876 and attached to the court house and located on the corner of Stanley and Ballarat Street. The land was donated by Otago Provincial Government and built by the committee of library subscribers. In 1965 the Queenstown Borough Council made the decision to replace the Queenstown Library.
The renovated Public Library was opened 1 May 1971 adjoining the original library building and named The Malaghan Library in acknowledgement of the contribution of $10 000 by Mr Len A. Malaghan, a grand nephew of Michael John Malaghan who arrived in Queenstown in 1863. He was also involved in many developments and assistance of the early development of Queenstown.
The New Queenstown Library, located in the council building in Gorge Road, was opened on 5 June 1999.
