Background
Welcome to our Glenorchy Library. The local community primarily fundraised for the centre.

We are housed in the Glenorchy Community Building, alongside the Medical Centre and the Museum. We are also situated next to the old Library, which is known locally as 'the most photographed library in New Zealand'.

We are happy to assist with any questions you may have. The library opens on Wednesday and Friday from 1.30 pm till 3.30 pm, but during the summer holiday period these days and hours are extended.

If you have any historical questions about the area Elaine will open the Museum for you! For help with any queries just call or email us.

Resources
Although Glenorchy has a small core collection of resources, we gain support form the larger libraries by receiving additional items on a circulation basis. Come in and check the library catalogue for information on all resources available within our district. Purchasing recommendations will be taken into consideration.

Services
Glenorchy Library is part of the Central Otago and Queenstown Lakes shared Library service. Services, membership, borrowing and issuing policies are consistent across the CODC / QLDC Library District.

History
In the small but active community of Glenorchy, the first efforts to establish a public lending library were in 1891.

The Rees Valley School was the initial location for a library, whilst searching continued for a suitable alternative. Local, John Meiklejohn, oversaw all issues pertaining to the library and its development.

By 1911 the catalogue showed close to 1000 titles and the Glenorchy library was in full swing. Glenorchy Landscape Photo

The location of the library continued to be an issue for locals until 1952, when the old library in the Rees Valley was artfully relocated using a tractor and skids. The new location was on Islay Street, where the building still stands to this day.

Originally the library was to be placed on the school reserve, but official opposition led to the secretary at the time, Jack Forbes, obtaining a section of vacant land from the Department of Lands and Survey. Locals proudly claim that it is the 'most photographed library in New Zealand'.

Community
For more community information please check out the Glenorchy Community Noticeboard.

Museum
The Glenorchy Museum is in the same building (Glenorchy Community Building) as the library. It was set up by a group of people interested in preserving the history of the area. A historic video has been made; copies of which are available for sale at $20 each. Please contact Elaine on 03 442 9952
